CONFESSIONS OF A PET GROOMER

As a pet groomer with eight years' experience, Desmond, 28, has many stories to tell.

'I dread handling dogs that aren't well taken care of. Some dog owners don't bother about their pets' basic grooming and leave everything to us.'

Pet grooming involves trimming the animals' fur and nails and bathing them.

Desmond said breeds like poodles and shih-tzus, which have long fur, need to be groomed every six to eight weeks but some owners send their dogs for grooming only every six months.

'By then, the dogs' fur is so matted that I take up to 3 1/2 hours to untangle the fur.

'If I spend so much time on one dog, I have to turn away other customers.'

Desmond earns a 20 per cent commission for every dog he grooms, in addition to his $2,000 monthly salary.
