Pet grooming store reopens in a better location

An Iowa City pet grooming business ordered to close two months ago as a result of clashing city codes has reopened in a bigger and better location.

“I like it,” said Kelley Dennis-Mcmann , owner of The Grooming Den. “There’s a lot more room, I can do the (pet) boarding, and there’s room for expansion if we need to.”

In July, the business, which operated in the basement of Dennis-Mcmann’s home, received a letter from the city ordering it to close. While the shop was licensed by animal control officials, the issue was that Iowa City zoning code forbids that type of business from operating in areas zoned as purely residential.

In cases like these, when conflict occurs between two city codes, the stricter one always applies.
